WFM Wednesday

My Works For Me Wednesday post today is about my snackbox in my vehicle. I briefly mentioned it in my last WFM post so I thought I would go a little more into it today.

Its not much really but I get so many comments on it (positive and not so positive) in real life I thought I would blog about it. (Because that’s what bloggers do right?)

Anyway all that it is, is a plastic shoebox sized tub with a lid that I got at the dollar tree. Yes folks, I shop at the dollar tree. Anyway in it I store snacks like granola bars, cereal bars, individual chip bags, and other non melting snacks (today it was 115 degrees in the truck at 6pm) and I also have some juice boxes in there. Its under the front seat and pretty much stays there. At least once a week I refill and rotate drinks as needed. But usually come Friday its in need of refilling.

The reasons I have this are plentiful but mainly I am cheap and my kids are ALWAYS hungry. They both have fast metabolisms and so they constantly snack. I want them to have healthyish options that don’t break my budget. Also I have been known to dip into it when running around and hungry.

Another reason is you never know what might happen. Recently there was a very bad accident on a bridge and cars were trapped for seven hours. HELLO?! You on a bridge for seven hours? What if you have kids? People laugh at my snack box and laugh at my anal retentiveness and OCD but trust me, you want to be in the car with me when you are stuck on a bridge for 7 hours. I know you won’t starve to death but you won’t kill your kids because they are crying because they are hungry.

I urge you to make a snack box and keep it filled and put it in your vehicle. Its to cheap not to do.

What works for you?

Winn Dixie Trip

So yall know how I love Winn Dixie. It wasn’t always like this. Sometimes prices are higher than Wal-Mart. BUT if you combine sale prices with coupons they beat Walmart every time. This is where stock piling come in. I buy just the good deals & pull the rest of my need items from my stocked pantry. This along with menu planning has really helped our food budget. I also meal plan differently. Instead of deciding what we are going to eat then shopping I look at the sale papers & let that dictate what dishes we will be eating. For example today they had rump roast B1G1. Pork chops were the same. So tonight we had grilled pork chops. We also had baked potatoes (on sale last week) and because corn was $0.20 an ear we also had grilled corn. I was able to grill everything so that saved on electricity.

I was also able to use my rain checks from last week. THAT was useful let me tell you. Butter was my main saver. Normally I get butter (not margarine) from where ever is cheapest which is sometimes Wal-mart for $3 a lb. WD brand is normally $3.50. Last week however they had Land O Lakes for $2.50. Great deal as butter seems to be on the upswing nationally. When I went last Monday night they were out but I got a rain check for 6 packages. I went today and normally they are $4.29. Thats a savings of $1.79 lb or $10.74 for all 6. That my friends is a good deal. Even at Wal-marts cheapest price of $3 I still saved a total of $3.

So do you see how stockpiling & using sales can make some places cheaper than others? I still shop at Wal-mart for some things. I am just more careful about where I get all my items from.

What good deals have you found recently?

Money Saving Tip

We are all looking to save money. Well I am going to give you a simple way to save a couple dollars a month. Its quick, easy & free. Are you ready? Here it is…..

Clean out your car!

That’s it. Yep…..just clean it out. You use more gas driving around a heavier car. So grab a empty laundry basket & a garbage bag & get to work.

I don’t mean you have to get it showroom detail clean. (Of course you should get it as clean as possible because it will last longer)

Anyway….take out everything you don’t need. Bring it inside & put it away. If its winter you probably don’t need beach stuff. In the summer you can probably take out all of your heavy winter items.

Now that everything is out really evaluate what goes back in. I have a spare diaper bag for my little one with a change of clothes, wipes, juice & a spare unopened snack. I also have reusable shopping bags & a lost & found bag (for items left at my house) and little things like pen & paper. That’s pretty much it. I try to clean out the car weekly. The less stuff you tote around the better your mileage will be. The better the millage the less gas you use & that’s more money in your pocket.

Another advantage of weekly cleaning is you notice thing that need to be cleaned up or repaired. The better the inside of your car looks the better the resale value of your vehicle.

Happy Saving!
